More about ELISA

ELISA finds ways for library and information professionals to enhance their services to their users through collaborative and co-operative ventures. Many of these ventures will have practical products that will be of direct interest to the general public; for example, the Edinburgh Libraries Guide, and library and information events listings.

Who is in ELISA at the moment?
At present there are over 130 libraries and information services registered with ELISA. There are 14 institutions represented on the ELISA Full Committee and many others represented on the Working Groups. Libraries and services represented are from all sectors of the LIS community and connections are being made with information services from other domains, such as business, education, museums, and archives.

How can I find out about library services in Edinburgh?
ELISA provides the Edinburgh Libraries Guide, which lists some 130 libraries and other organisations willing to assist the enquirer. From big libraries with international reputations to small, specialist information centres, many sizes and types of libraries are represented here.

How does ELISA work?
The key components of ELISA are the Working Groups. These Groups are convened to provide a way for ELISA to guide collaborative work in accordance with the Edinburgh Libraries Strategy. The Working Groups are focussed on key strands from the Strategy and at present there are three Groups operational:

  • Access
  • Staff Development & Training
  • Web and e-Content

The Working Groups have the following aims:

  • To provide a forum for discussion in their particular area of interest and to encourage an environment of co-operation and collaboration.
  • To gather and disseminate information on current local, national and international developments in research and best practice.
  • To identify practical, discrete projects that fit their remit and that can be realised within the ELISA framework.
  • To take full responsibility for the practical projects that they adopt.

Working Groups usually meet every two months. If you are interested in finding out more about the Groups please contact the Group Convenor on the relevant page.

The work of ELISA is guided and administered by the ELISA Full Committee and managed by a Business Committee.

What are the strategic priorities of ELISA?
Edinburgh Libraries & Information Services Agency brings together library and information professionals from different library sectors for advocacy and cross-sectoral working in the following areas:

  • joint staff training and development opportunities
  • co-ordinated development of library and information services and resources
  • enhancing and broadening access to library services and resources throughout the city
  • promoting best practice in delivery of library services.

Can anyone become a member of ELISA?
With representatives from the public library sector, university and college libraries, the National Library, school libraries and special information services, the Agency can apply a wide range of experience and expertise in tackling issues affecting the Capital’s library and information services. Although membership of ELISA is not exhaustive, the Agency seeks to canvass opinion and input from all sections of the library and information community in Edinburgh.
