How to use this guide

  • Make sure you have used all available information resources in your own library service, including consulting the library staff, before contacting another library service.
    • Search through the guide for a service that is likely to be able to satisfy your enquiry. If the organisation has a web site, use it to check the latest information on services, access and opening times.
    • Pay particular attention to the arrangements for public access. Telephone ahead to make an appointment, check that the listed opening times are current and enquire about any charges that may be made for services.
    • Access information has been added for most locations from February 2002. It is still advisable to phone ahead and check arrangements before visiting.
    • If an information service you wish to use is not open to the public, telephone or write to the library or, better still, ask staff at your own library to make an enquiry on your behalf. Please preface all seven-digit telephone or fax numbers with 0131 if phoning from outside the Edinburgh area.

    About the guide
Within the City of Edinburgh, an unprecedented degree of co-operation and collaboration is taking place amongst libraries and other information providers. The guide aims to open up access to these resources for all who have a genuine information need and to all those in the city engaged in lifelong learning and education in the broadest sense. The guide is published under the auspices of the Edinburgh Libraries & Information Services Agency and is part of the Cultural Policy of the City of Edinburgh Council. Its aim is to develop partnership working between libraries from every sector for the benefit of all.

If you have any updates or amendments for the guide please contact Fiona Laing f.laing@nls.uk or telephone: 0131 623 3984
