Building a professional network : CIIG

Construction Industry Information Group (CIIG) is a UK wide organisation. Many construction information professionals work alone and CIIG provides a forum for discussion and networking. They produce a monthly newsletter of new publications, seminars etc and also organise visits and talks as well as social gatherings, which are usually in the London area. Some of these looked very interesting, and I was always disappointed not to be able to go.

Early in 2009, 3 members of CIIG based in Edinburgh agreed to meet for lunch to give us an opportunity, to compare notes, exchange ideas, and grumble about architects and other construction professionals.

The first meeting was for lunch in March 2009, when the three of us met. We had an enjoyable lunch and interest was expressed in a visit to my library, the Resource & Information Centre in Waverley Court, the new headquarters of City of Edinburgh Council.

This meeting was advertised in TACIT and five people came for a tour, followed by lunch at a local bistro. It was decided to make this a regular arrangement, every 3 months or so. Our last meeting was at Harley Haddow’s offices to see their library, again followed by lunch.

With library management systems, classification and cataloguing to talk about, as well as the vagaries of the construction industry we are never at a loss for interesting conversation. We now have 7 people in the group, so I suppose that we are CIIG Edinburgh or perhaps CIIG Scotland.
